As the boat pulls away from the moldering pilings that served as a makeshift dock, slipping quietly through the Spanish moss, I turn to the interior of the island and see the old mill slowly grinding away. It is clear that it has done no useful work in years, but the wheel still dips into the brackish water and some part of the mechanism still turns inside the building.

The clack and grind of it stutters at a missing tooth or broken cog, breaking me free of the memories of a childhood before this place was empty.
